Gmeinder D 75 BB-SE
Seven D 75 BB-SE locomotives were built by Gmeinder (Mosbach) between 2004 and 2012. They are a 760mm gauge diesel-hydraulic type utilizing a Caterpillar engine driving all four axles through a Voith transmission.
They are equipped with Electric Train Heat supply, remote control and push-pull operation and additionally can easily be converted to standard gauge by swapping bogies and buffers.
Two were ordered by the Zillertalbahn in 2004 taking the running numbers D13 and D14. They were delivered in August and November of that year respectively
In February 2007 a single example was delivered to the OBB / Pinzgauerbahn in all over Zillertal red livery though unbranded. It was given the erroneous number 2096 001-0 (!). The OBB example was ordered to replace 2095 002-8 and 2095 003-6 which had been written off in a head on accident at Bramberg in July 2005. Although the Zillertalbahn had stood back on their orders, the locomotive saw little if any use before the line was sold to the Salzburger Lokalbahn in July 2008 and re-numbered to Vs81. Just a guess, but the reason behind the lack of whilst use designated Class 2096 may have been the check digit not being recognized. Its number should have been 2096 001-9.
Also in 2007, the Zillertalbahn who had ordered another two, to take the numbers D15 and D16 took a later delivery. These arrived at Jenbach in April and June respectively. The Zillertalbahn put all of their new locomotives into service straight away, using them on freight, ballast and passenger turns, in particular taking advantage of their push-pull capability with DVT's specially ordered for the task. Initially the Gmeinder locomotives were delivered in Zillertal red livery but, from 2011, D14 / D15 / D16 were wrapped in advertising liveries, taking advantage of their plain flat sides. D13 never received advertisement liveries, staying in house colours until being disposed of in 2017.
The SLB seemed happy with the 2096 / Vs81 and in November 2009 took delivery of a second example to be numbered Vs82. An upturn in traffic saw another example delivered in May 2012 numbered Vs83. Both were delivered in the SLB maroon and white livery that Vs81 had been re-painted into earlier.
In December 2017, the Zillertalbahn sold their oldest example (D13) to the SLB becoming their Vs84 and painted into the SLB livery. This meant that the four SLB 2095's Vs71 / Vs72 / Vs73 / Vs74 were more or less standby locomotives, indeed Vs74 was taken out of service and Vs73 was hired to the Zillertalbahn in March 2021 as ironically they were short of power
The first of the few. ZB D13 ... now SLB Vs84.
